Accessible Rummikub
The classic tile game, rebuilt so a blind player and a sighted player can sit at the same table as equals.
The challenge
Online board games are built for the eye alone. A blind player either cannot join at all, or gets a stripped-down version of the game while everyone else plays the real one.
Our approach
We rebuilt Rummikub with speech and the keyboard as the primary interface rather than an afterthought. Every tile, set and move is announced, a whole turn takes four keys, and the same table stays a pleasure to look at and to play with a mouse. Friends join a room with a code, and Robbi the robot is there to practise against.
The outcome
One game that blind and sighted players play together on equal terms, free, in the browser, with no account and nothing to install.
A classic tile game rebuilt keyboard first and screen-reader first, so the player who cannot see the board is playing exactly the same game as everyone else.
